First reactions to PES 2010 demo
Posted by William | Filed under News, Opinion
I’ve just downloaded the PES 2010 demo for the Xbox 360, and here are my first thoughts and observations on this year’s version:
- The game has licenced music! When you load the demo, copyright notices come up for the featured artists contained within the demo: The Chemical Brothers, Kaiser Chiefs, The Telephones, and Delphic. Something PES has been missing for years!
- The presentation is fantastic; slick, responsive, attractive.
- Although you can only select ‘Exhibition’ on the main menu, there is a ‘Community’ section which is greyed out in the demo.
- The demo can be played with up to four players
- The graphics are great, very solid and detailed. Players stand and move like their real life counterparts… Check out the classic Gerrald stance.
- No commentary on the demo
- Penalties are now taken from a side-on camera, and you get a brief tutorial screen for how to take and save penalties - you are now told to use the dpad for direction. The keeper feels much more responsive for penalties.
- You can move the keeper a couple of sidesteps left and right along the goal line at a penalty.
- Attacking player runs are much improved, you can really watch them striding alongside and infront of you for the ball. INCREDIBLE IMPROVEMENT
- The pause menu sounds are much more subtle and quieter than previous versions, this is a great change imo.
- The 360-direction movement feels nice. I was worried it would take some getting used to, but it just makes movement feel smoother and less on rails.
- When taking a corner, the camera is in the same place as usual (behind the player taking the corner), but the camera now moves to the penalty box a lot quicker and smoother than before. Nice touch.
- Player animations when receiving and passing the ball are much improved.
- I cannot remember if this was in PES 2009, but their are now linesmen who run along the lines alongside your players.
- The crowd interaction is much better. The crowd now cheers and claps when you make a vital tackle in your own half, and excitement builds audibly when you’re in the oppositions box.
- The ball physics seem more real than ever.
- The is no movie or adverts after you play a match, so you can keep playing demo games over and over.

the graphics look excellent, shooting seems to be fixed, as does the erratic behaviour of goalkeepers.
pes beats the new fifa hands down, i can’t wait for the full version to come out and start playing master league
seems konami have done a great job on this one, quite possibly the best pes since 4/5

September 17th, 2009 at 2:57 pmOnce again another excellent additional to Pro Evolution Soccer collection. Everytime there is great improvement in the overall visual and tactical aspect of the game.
Fifa’s game play is horrific, get a hold of your self man! Its like controlling 11 drunkards from the bar to the toilet. Delayed reactions and no chance of scoring along the way.

September 17th, 2009 at 4:53 pmWow…this plays a lot different to pro evo 2009 which i have for PC a and better than the fifa 10 demo. From first play i was hooked and it looks so realistic as well. Only thing i think they should improve is the keeper, make them save and hold the ball more often instead of hitting it out, and also make the chants more team orientated.

September 17th, 2009 at 10:39 pmIts a big improvement!!!! Really fluid football can be played. My main concern are the goal keepers, the animations are still the same, the same parrys with the slap sound:( i hope they change this, cuz it spoils the freshness! More gracefull dives, they shud take a couple of steps then really stretch cuz at the min they dive from the spot they are stood on! But thumbs well up:)

I will buy this game however it feels, PES i magic. I played FIFA between ‘97 to ‘02, then I was introduced to PES and was blown away
I hope the PC-version of PES2010 is somewhat great, so I can practice and kick my friends butt in the 360-later!

Im really sad right now, have been looking forward for this moment, but now? Naahh…

September 18th, 2009 at 11:57 amChris i feel the same it is way too slow you tap the pass button by the time it does anything your tackled, also its way to hard to take any players on when you press the sprint bottom it looks like they arent even sprinting, they need to look at this otherwise another poor version of pes, theres no point of having nice graphics if the gameplay isnt good.

September 18th, 2009 at 9:19 pmomg… just played ps3 demo and i am so disappointed, it has 2 b tye worst pes so far, The gamplay is a complete joke, The refs dont know the rules of football as they give u yellow cards for getting the ball in a tackle, Shooting is so unrealistic and difficult, They dont have any power gauges and u have very little control over ur penalties. Konami should go back to pes 5 gameplay cos they have forgotten how to make football games

Rab Nebula Says:
September 19th, 2009 at 1:42 amHaving played both the Pro and Fifa demos they are hugely different.
Pro does feel at first like the passing is slow compared to Fifa but it is something which improves over time. The quick flick of the right stick can be risky at first but when you start to get used to it then you feel a sense of achievement for a perfectly weighted cross, short pass or through ball over the top. This approach to passing you feel is something that PES is pushing for to add to the realism. It is a very innovative way of passing the ball and now you can no longer scream at your TV for it passing the ball to some empty place in the pitch as it will be your fault and up to you to improve. Pro is the most real with moments of beautiful football and moments of pure scrappy play as you desperately try to hack the ball off your goal line or bundle it over your opponents.
Fifa is much more basic with very little in the way of tactical gameplay it’s emphasis lies hugely in your reaction time and speed of movement. A simple press of the left bumper and shoot and you can soon have the balling flying in the top corner from 30 yards 80-85% of the time. Also the lack of teamvision where your opponents improve and learn as you play means that beating hardest difficulty 6 or 7 nil is a common event in Fifa. This is where the adaptability and depth of tactics in Pro really make their mark. The opponents read and learn your movements and tactics and adapt which makes for much more realistic scorelines.
Fifa Skills? There are few weekends where you see more than 3 highlights of truly amazing skills in all 10 premier league fixtures so why should a player be able to just pull a skill out as easily as fifa allows you. Pro skills require practice and movement of the ball. One mistake and you will be punished. On fifa I can easily fool a defender by doing some step overs and flicking the ball up.
I enjoy Fifa as it is a fast fluid game but nobody can tell me that it is an accurate simulation of football. Look at the Champions League matches this week. They were slow at points with scrappy play and rough challenges but there were a few finer moments along the way. Pro manages to hit this balance of play.
The one thing Pro lacks is a good strong online play. Fifas online capacity is phonomenal for a football game and the full online team play is fantastic. This years Pro may not surpass Fifas online play but I think with the servers being handed over to Microsoft and Sony you can expect a huge improvement.

some remarks though:
Why is Xabi Alonso still playing at Liverpool?
The AI doesn’t seem to be improved alot; I could easily win the match at Top Playeranyway I don’t think it will be enough to beat Fifa this year either

what about the advantage rule? I was through but a defender fouled me and I got a free kick instead of advantage?

Rab Nebula Says:
September 19th, 2009 at 6:39 pmIve seen worse on Fifa to be honest. Also Fifa rarely plays much of an advantage either. AI will never be a perfect substitute for the real thing either with referees or player decisions but in all honesty Pro does come a lot closer than Fifa to the real game.
With regards to players at the wrong clubs. Pro often leaves the transfers as the last thing to do while it spends the last few weeks fixing bugs with the AI. Fifa just brushes up the game from the previous year. If you played PES 2009 you will realise that this new PES has had a complete revamp graphically, tactically and with the new TeamVision 2.0. Hopefully they will build on it from here. You really cant judge a game on things like transfers until the full game is out. Most complaints I have heard about the new PES are things that they have actually sorted for this year. A change in servers from konami to microsoft and sony should see less lag. The transfers will be updated by the time the game is released and they have all the players names (in recent Fifas Didier Drogba has been called D. Dokba while playing as Ivory Coast) They now have all the kits and proper boots and balls from adidas, puma and Nike. Anyone who even brings these things up when complaining about PES is just being ignorant.

September 20th, 2009 at 12:23 amI have been such a loyal pro evo fan, iv had every game right the way back to snes and always hated fifa!! Pro was at its best at 5 for sheer playability, but i hate too say it to pes fans…. Fifa is better! Pro is tired and i feel it needs a new engine, fifa was crap, always was, but a friend who loved pro bought fifa 09 an recomended it to me and i tried it and it felt fresh, the players did wat i wanted and the goals i cud score looked fab and made me realise konami have been fobbing us off with little tweaks here an there, fifa really pushed to match pro and in fifa 10 they have took over pro for me! I cant see why pro fan boys are still holding on cuz its still the same as the last effort, they have tried to much with tje same engine and it just feels sloppy! I know the new tactics system will add new depth, but theres nothing making me feel exited in this demo, the fifa one did! R.I.P pro evo, or make this game amazing again!!!

Tom Says:
September 20th, 2009 at 10:39 amI have to agree with some points from Big Mac above - the fifa demo was much more impressive however….
the fifa demo as amazingly well presented and exciting to play as it is, with fantastic commentary, that presentation is masking what still for me appears to be a very arcady game, the animation is fantastic but i am still running 80 yards with Messi and having a simple tap in
the pro evo demo while it is a huge improvement in animation and presentation, it feels like football, it may not have the commentary or looks to take it to that next level but the football is just superb, it still feels very last generation however but i still feel like i am challenged to some extent by the computer and the new added touches like swerve on all shot types and the 360 degree controls give it new life.
I want to see a new pes engine to take it that one step further but for now it is still so much fun to play, the scope of different goal types is incredible, the auto crossing has been improved ten fold and the new heading animations are brilliant.

Rab Nebula Says:
September 21st, 2009 at 3:40 am@ Big Mac. Your point about the goals on Fifa looking “fab” just shows what kind of a game it is. There is no variety on there. You get to 25 yards out press a button for finesse shot and the ball flies seemlessly into the top corner a large majority of the time. The AI never adjusts so you can just keep scoring the same goal over and over. Having grown up as a Fifa boy from 1994 through to 2009 I have found that Fifa is just not challenging enough. Every goal ends up looking the same and there is too much emphasis on skills when in an actual game you will rarely see more than 2 or 3 moments of flair such as a spin feint or triple step over followed by a rainbow flick over the head. Players make mistakes and PES replicates this when you try things like over hit a pass or try to spin and the ball rolls off.
In Pro I have never scored 1 goal that is the same. The free flow ball physics as opposed to FIFAs “lets stick the ball to their feet” approach helps this. With the new team vision engine you will find that you will have to approach your attacks differently each time. And with out the finesse button you have to rely on positioning your player perfectly and timing your shot right with the right approach, timing, angle and power and avoiding player pressure to score. That is how PES determines whether a shot will fly true or not. Not just a press of the LB+B and its in.
Graphically I have found the player likenesses on PES to be a lot more accurate than FIFA this year and the new dynamic lighting engine really brings out the brilliant texturing like skin blemishes and stubble. I find Fifa to look really washed out and bland.
Check this link where you can see pics of Pro and Fifa compared. I reccomend you actually find a photo of the players too just to see how close each game is. So far I have found PES to be more impressive.

September 22nd, 2009 at 10:56 pmHaving played the pes demo constantly since friday i have to admit i was extremely disappointed with it …..that is until aboutl 2 hurs ago when all of a sudden everything just clicked!!! For a start i had been using the d-pad until suday as ive always found it easier for pes and even though i knew 360 dribbling was on the the sticks i stil found it hard to get to grips with. I have been reading so many bad things about the way this years game plays on various forums and was even beginning to think it myself!! …ive even been gulity of posting bad comments myself!…. HOWEVER ……the point im trying to make here is that for alot of people pes will seem very frustrating and awkward at first and this is where you must not lose faith because the game takes alot of opening up and you will not see this straight away……remember the old games on ps2? everytime a new version appeared there was a transition period where by u had to lose the habits from the old game and learnn how to use the new movment patterns to open it up, this somtimes could take a month or more! This game is no different apart from the the fact that the last two installments of pro evo havent been up to scratch but this one is! Trust me, when u get this baby up and running like it should be you will see what i mean ….it aint perfect but is easily the best addition by far in the last few years. Just give it some practice and all of a sudden everything will just click and you will see why it takes so much skill, time and effort to get the most out of this game which is what makes it the pes we know and love!!!

Stuart Says:
September 25th, 2009 at 12:56 amI’m an addict. I’m not even sure if PES is good anymore, I just need it. Every October, I need it. lol
I’ve been playing the demo all week and much like the comment above, it took a while. Then again, for me, every game in the series took a while to get into. I played PES 2009 for most of the year, however, I got FIFA at the start of the summer because most of my friends played it. And thus, I downloaded the FIFA demo also. Which, I have to admit, is pretty good and they’ve fixed a lot of the problems from 09 (the crossing for one).
Now I have downloaded the PES demo. And I knew it would take something special for it to keep up with FIFA and I was praying that it did. At first, I wasn’t too sure, but if you really think about, you can’t really compare the two demos. Fifa’s demo has been scheduled all summer long and has been planned, whilst Konami seemed to have released a somewhat half-hearted version in order to retain its market and not lose out to EA. I say half-hearted…it’s still pretty good.
Once you’ve played it a number of times, you realise how good it is. There are a few sketchy things, one being the penalties, but the ball physics, the visuals and the individuality of each player is really impressive. I love playing with Fernando Torres and it actually feeling like Torres. And with Gerrard. And with most players. Try as you may on FIFA, but you cannot pick up the ball with Gerrard and shoot (fiercely) from 40 yards out. I can’t, anyway.
PES does have that arcade feel about it, but that is, to be fair, what makes it better than FIFA. I just wish someone would let Konami know what a whistle actually sounds like.
I hope the commentary’s good. Shame there isn’t any really. I would love to see someone like Peter Drury or a Sky Sports commentator integrated into the Champions League games. That would be amazing.
One of the features that I’ve noticed and I hope is even more so in the actual game is the crowd noises. When you regain possesion, the crowd cheer. It’s awsome.
Overall, I like it. It’s getting there. Slowly.

September 28th, 2009 at 8:47 pmPES 2010:
Can I just say that I used to be a huge, huge fan of PES…since ISS pro. I loved konami’s release’s until…….well until the year of 2008 when it all started going downhill and I switched over to the rebel alliance (god forbid).
“Pro Evolution Soccer finds itself in the Liverpool role these days. Demoted to second-best in 2008 after a few years of increasing stagnation, Konami will not enjoy FIFA 10. Unless something dramatic has happened since last month, the gap is ever more significant. If last year saw FIFA knocking PES off its perch, this year it’s chasing it around the birdcage with a plank of wood and a sledgehammer.” - Eurogamer Sept 2009.
LOL.
Gameplay:
Plays very sluggish and there is a huge amount of latency between controller input to player. > FIFA winds this one easily, its way more responsive.
Shots thud into a lifeless net like a gym medicine ball. Players are rigid and passing takes a liftime to complete.
Individual animations: Every player on PES seems to move the same! When you see Torres and Messi …the all run the same way! > Again FIFA has each player moving in a fluid and individual way that is in keeping with their style, weight, power, etc….!
Dribbling/agility: Oh dear Konami, the old animations are still rigid and stuck on with blu tack. Roboto football.
Graphics: PES has an incredible likness of each player…very nice job indeed. However that’s where the similarity ends…..once you start playing its like a team of clones…or drones….zzzz… .
Commentary/Presentation: A little better but still a very strange layout…no comentary in the demo but no doubt it will be as ridicolous as before. Paling in comparison to Andy Grey and Martin Tyler. >Sorry but FIFA wins this one again. (Even without the licenced champions league)!
But hey….PES die hards will slam me…..they are living in denial…don’t take my word see IGN’s first review….

Rab Nebula Says:
September 30th, 2009 at 1:59 am@kog: Play PES 2009 and then play the demo straight after and then tell us the passing is slow. The fluidity of the passing this year is down to how you set your tactics up and the way you pass the ball and move with it. After a little practice (having to practice a game is a good sign because it means theres a challenge) your passing should be easy and you wont have any trouble with throughballs. You just need to use them at the most opportune moment as a tactical choice, if its not working out then approach it with a different strategy. To say “no thru pass no pes” is somewhat ignorant of every other aspect of what pro brings to the football simulation table. If you want a game based entirely round the through pass then maybe you should just design a game called Thru Pass Football and see how many people buy it. I dont think thered be many. PES still has a thru pass, get practicing and forget about the new FIFA with its over complex menu system and unchanged FIFA 09 gameplay or graphics. Its dull and the gameplay is lifeless. PES feels more like football than any FIFA I have ever played and being a FIFA boy growing up, I have played a lot of them.
-
Stelz Says:
October 1st, 2009 at 8:47 pmUnfortunately I do not have the demo of PES 2010… But I’ll still buy the game. It’s always shat all over FIFA! I still feel stupid for buying into the hype last year… The ONE time I succumbed to temptation (and in my defence it did come out three weeks before PES (also I needed a fix)) and gave FIFA a reprieve for the first time since the turn of the century. Konami’s last offering WAS rubbish, but the gameplay still way outshone that of EA’s… And for me, that is the only thing that counts. Anyway, I shall be spending the next three weeks in feverish anticipation! All hail the Evo! Amen.

The Bad and Most Crucial
1. Slow passing
2. Slow movement and lack of dribblingThe Good
1. Better graphics engine and animations
2. Better shootingThe perfect Pro Evo 2099
1. PES6 Dribbling
2. Pro Evo 10 shooting and graphics
3. Fifa 10 passing speed and physicsWhat will I buy? Fifa 10 later today because unfortunately its better then pro evo 10 gameplay wise.

Rab Nebula Says:
October 2nd, 2009 at 10:36 amPassing and movement is something which takes a lot of practice on PES.
Get FIFA if you cant be bothered to actually play a game of football, if you want unrealistic, washed out dull graphics and soft floaty ball physics. If you want the only mistakes not to be because you’re not good enough but because the game has programmed it in to randomly make a mistake every so often. The passing on PES isnt easy but its down to you to adapt your tactics, alter your movement and get more efficient. FIFA locks its passes in on you and locks its shots in on the top corner. Its like a “Tomys, My first football game” for little kids and requires next to no skill but with over complicated menus that only a heart surgeon with enough time to plan and prepare the operation of starting an online tournament or team play game can do. The menus are a mess and the gameplay is generic, mainstream and unrealistic. It is the epitomy of EA games.

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:11 pmFifa 2010 has just come out, and what a shame. How can they bring out crap and unrealistic games, they havnt been up to scratch since 2002. Cant wait for Pro Evo 2010, only a few weeks to wait.

and i have to admit, i wanted to hate fifa 10 but i cant, its very good. it has that authentic feel. only had thing i can think of is the crowd dont react loadly enough to a goal being scored. its just a little cheer and thats it. and it wasnt from the away side this was the home side.

pes vs fifa (i want GT5) Says:
October 4th, 2009 at 11:35 amI played the pes 2010 demo for quite a bit and found it really slow and unresponsive. However that was because i was comparing it to pes 2009 which was hyper speed football. No way in real life can players stop, turn 90 degrees and shoot, as fast as you could in that game.
This years game is all about timing, positioning and waiting for the right moments to make a pass or go for a shot. It’s become more of a tactical/simulation game now rather than the arcadey style of 2009.I played the fifa 10 demo and thought it was pretty good although that was before i played pes 2010. The ball physics in fifa are as described by someone else “floaty” and you don’t feel in total control. Shooting in fifa is also a lot easier and that was after i took off the assists functions.
For me pro evo 2010 is gonna be the better game.

October 7th, 2009 at 8:32 amPES 2010 wins its just so much better then fifa……….
and yes fifa is agame for kids and an unrealistic football game
if you want to really control the ball and feel like in total control then get PES 2010 and if you cant be bothered for realistic stuff and just wants to do some next fake shit then get fifa 10……its so unrealistic…….

October 7th, 2009 at 10:38 ami love pro evo and much prefer it to fifa (even though i like fifa too). My only thing with pro evo is i wish they would get all the teams much like football manager i.e so u can start off way low in blue square south for example and work your way up. I like a challenge and that would be gddddd. I know thats hard for them to do and would take tonnes of time but it would give you more choice than just two leagues in master league.
As for the gameplay i think pro evo is amazing, fifa i find to sticky and slow. -

October 7th, 2009 at 11:37 amNice name Essien ;D
Your idea would be nice. You should put it on “Have Your Say” through the official PES site so they have something to aim for. I dont think theyd go as far as Blue Square South, maybe bringing in Championship teams and Serie Bs so when teams get relegated and promoted its not some random team in the league from random place in Denmark. The major problem would be licenses though. They barely have enough top teams and should probably secure them before they try to get lower leagues.
Before the new FIFA came out, everyone I knew said they didnt want it. Then that TV ad came out and Pro wasnt out for another 3 weeks AGAIN and they fell victim of marketing pressure.
Ive seen the full game in action now and its menus are overcomplicated, the ball sticks to the players and locks in passes so its easy to move the ball around. Most importantly, it feels like the same old fifa with a different skin and people are falling for it. Wheres the challenge in something that lets the ball stick to you, make a ridiculous passing move because the ball locks in to players and no pass falls short, or you do some stupid skill to flick the ball up and volley it in the top corner from the same place on the pitch 3 times in a row. Pro only sends the ball where you tell it to rather than to the nearest player. It takes into account player movement, speed and their facing direction aswell as player pressure before you can get a shot on target. The worse these factors are in real life, the less likely you are to score and its the same in PES. FIFA with a “stupid automatically put the ball on target, finesse button” just lets you score goals at your whim. But it isnt fun because it isnt football.
FIFA’s AI, unlike Pro, doesnt learn and change. I have never scored the same goal on Pro because you constantly have to adapt and try new moves. Why is that good? Because in real life, people learn and they make mistakes on the pitch but never twice.
As for doubters of the new pro, play an old one and then play the new one and then tell me theres no difference. Play for more than 2 games and play around with the tactics and then tell me theres less depth than FIFA. Then Id get you put in an institute for the psychologically unstable, point my finger in your face (if it’s not too busy trying to master manual goalkeeping) and then call you a liar.
I loved FIFA when I was younger and have always tried to sway the argument towards it, but I’ve matured and explored. Now Im open each year to either game being better and this new PES seems to be more Football than ever and Konami have listened to a lot of fans as to how to improve. It hasnt stopped there. Theyre still asking and still listening and perfecting PES 2010 even though its out in just a couple of weeks. Maybe FIFA might change next year but who knows until its out. For this season Im Pro.

October 8th, 2009 at 9:09 amHi all, Mix reviews really. Its hard to say which is better as i always find the first day i get pro evo myself and my house mates think its crap and moan about every little detail but then after about 2 days we all love the game.
I am a Pro Evo guy, fifa always and still just seems a kids game, i feel anybody could pick fifa up win a there first game but Pro Evo takes some mastering.
Anyway my main point is hold judgment till the game is released according to the winning eleven team the game isnt finished for uk so demo isnt the complete game but i imagine not much will change with the game play.

October 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pmI have enjoyed playing both incarnations of the beautiful game over the years, from fifa ealy on before the ISS series apeared. fifa 10 is a good solid effort , fast play interesting games 09 for me was so slow and the last 2 pro evo games have been terrible for online play.
i never really played either much because of this hopefully pro evo has taken steps towards tackling the problem as although different in their approaches i found both games equally enjoyable offline.
enjoying fifa 10 at the mo so come on evo knock my socks off once more , i’ve room 4 both of you in my life

November 16th, 2009 at 8:14 pmAs per usual it takes a little time but this time I am very unhappy with the new pro! Turning is slow, games are boring, why did you ruin such a good game. The graphics are great but the game play is poor. Hate to say it but I am now a Fifa man.
Sort it out Konami!!!
