    that cant be rite!?

  4. As a start, Pro Evolution Soccer can be said to be quite a step forward for the publishers, Konami. Finally, we are seeing a fully licensed ‘Champions League’ as well as the new ‘Become a Legend’ mode. To begin with, I was not a PES-Head; I always get to try out both games at either friends or the local store. To date, I am normally inclined to go for the Konami title rather than the EA Sports one.
One of the core ideas of the game is the new ‘Become a Legend’ mode, where, the user creates a new player from scratch, changing his various appearance and accessories attributes. Obviously, the physical and technical attributes are never directly manipulated. Once the character is created, the player is offered some contracts with low lying teams, and, if accepted, the player is transferred to the club in question. There, inter-team matches start and one needs to actually fight for a place in the first team by playing as well as possible in these matches. Once the player is selected to play for the big guys, that’s where the fun starts. After every match, the player’s stats are improved according to, a) the strengths of the player, which can be manipulated by the users and, b) the actions a player is led to do during the match. I found it very helpful to start out improving my sprint speed and later upgrade my kicking and dribbling techniques since I could finally run on a through ball and actually out-run the defender marking me.
The usual modes like ‘Master League’ and ‘Cup’ are still available and the players are given the challenge of taking a team and making it the best ever, winning whatever they can grab by the end of the season. In the ‘Champions League’, the player chooses one of the teams which actually take part in the champions league and move on to try and win the world’s most prestigious title of them all.
Another thing worth mentioning, apart from the awesome graphics, which although may be less photorealistic than Fifa will still make you think; “Hey, isn’t that Ribery?!” when the entrance scene starts. Another very interesting segment of the game is that of player animations. Konami, in my opinion, have the leading edge in this sector. Just try it, grab anyone from the most known players, be it Ibrahimovic, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldinho or Fernando Torres, and mash away on your d-pad. The way the player will try to dribble the ball, perform turns, keep possession as well as the way they run will immediately make think about the player in question. For example, try a freekick with Ronaldo (not the chubby one) and you will see that in-game he is also using the “cowboy” stance.
I do really like the retro style menus although I am seemingly quite lonely in the masses. Music and sounds are, as always, of great quality although yet no actual songs have been used in PES.
As for system requirements, on the consoles it is no problem, but I found that on PC, the game is totally resource free. I can run the game, change windows, chat on msn and the game will still run perfectly with no lag. The code optimisation to make best use of a computer’s resources, even if it might not be a high end one, is really impressive in my opinion on Konami’s side.
So…the verdict, I will give it an 8 on 10. I love to play the ‘Become a Legend’ mode but I do have something to say about goal keeper animations sometimes. All in all, a great game, not to be missed, especially if you’ve always relished a chance to play for your favourite team and actually, become, a legend.
